I’m currently in a Starbucks in my hometown enjoying my favorite January beverage. Prepare for a stream of conscious type of ramble.

Now that Starbucks is such a rarity for me, I’ve realized that the Pistachio line of drinks is my ultimate favorite. I can just skip the PSLs, gingerbread lattes, and peppermint anything’s from now on. Remind me of that come September.

Yes, we’re doing a Pantry Challenge, but I used a gift card. 😜

Do you know I am so excited for the new year? I’m well aware that it’s not any different than last week, but I do love a fresh start and a chance to think creatively about the future.

If you get the LAM newsletter, you probably already got a peek at my to be read list. I’m pretty jazzed about this course of study. And I’m really eager to dig in. I already finished How to Read a Book: Advice for Christian Readers. I hope to have a review post for you next week.

This morning I listened to You Who? Why You Matter and How to Deal with It driving through LA. The traffic was light, though I’ve noticed a new phenomena of slow drivers parking it in the fast lane. Pro tip: the #2 and #3 lanes are faster!

Anyway, chapters 7 & 8 were incredibly convicting and made me laugh at the same time. Rachel Jankovic has such a way of speaking the truth and helping you laugh at yourself. Those chapters have me rethinking how I’ve been communicating with you all these years. Have I been playing along with a “worship of self” culture? So much to think on.

One thing I am confident about, though, is what I said in this post. Resolutions are not what you think they are. Read it and let’s chat in the comments!

List of frogs to eat.

I’ve seen lots of social media posts talking about a slow January, resting, taking things in stride, enjoying the moments. And while I totally get it, I am still susceptible to the tyranny of the urgent and feeling like I need to hurry up and get stuff done.

As I was thinking about this, I realized that there are lots of little things that weigh on me, tasks that take brain power and really do need to get done. Some of them are the kind of task where you’d need to haul out a lot of stuff and make it worse before it got better.

I’m calling it my list of frogs, as in “time to eat the frog”. Some of these are things that have been on my list for weeks, months, and even years. They are weighing on me and I want to cut them lose.

If you’ve got a great strategy for these kind of tasks, I’d love to hear it. My current plan is to block out a day each week to tackle the list.

How was your week?

  1. I find I need the right motivation to just do it. I don’t know what that motivation is, but when I sit down and make the 3-5 phone calls I’ve been dreading, they’re over and often not nearly as bad as I built them up to be. I try to hold on to that knowledge the next time I find myself putting that kind of task off.

  2. I have a bunch of these type of things to do, too-mostly scheduling appointments. I went back to work full time in August (tbd on if that was a good decision) and I’ve been putting things off because it’s a nuisance to schedule around the workday and kids school. 🤣 I also need to start brainstorming and working towards hosting a graduation party for my senior. I think we’ll use that party as an excuse to fix up our back patio area, but that comes with getting work quotes, etc. All that while trying to have a restful January, too. Balance? 😵‍💫
