Hello, hi, how are you? How did your week go?

We are nearing a year of living in our current rental. It’s been interesting to see the differences across the seasons. The roses have gone absolutely wild. Remember this ginormous bouquet? Those are flowers from this bush pictured.

Recently, I realized the power of deadheading. In deadheading, you clip off the dead flowers so that the plant can put energy into new growth. Two weeks ago I trimmed back this bush that was going crazy.

I think it’s a lesson for life, human life. There are some practices, habits, relationships that are basically dead ends. We need discernment to know which ones to “cut out”, but by doing so we can invest more energy into fruitful pursuits.

Are there things that aren’t really growing that could be pruned in your life?

This has been the case for me over the last 6-8 years. I realized that I was pouring a ton of energy into activities and relationships that bore no fruit. I made a conscious decision to turn that energy toward my personal health, my marriage, and my children, instead.

It has been so worth it.

Look at the new growth now?! In about another week it will be filled with enough blooms to fill another waste basket bouquet. (Yes, that is what I used for a vase in that previous post. lol)

Something to think about, right?

Five Favorite Things

Starbucks Game

Each season Starbucks hosts some type of sweepstakes and includes a video game. This season, I really enjoyed the game called Rhythmic Rooftops. Originally there were several levels and challenges to it, but it’s currently defaulted to one where you get points.

I’d love to find an alternative for it. Do you know of a game like this? Please let me know!

Lucy Lawless’ New ‘Do

The girls and I enjoy watching My Life is Murder on the Acorn TV channel on Amazon. The new season is now available so we’ve enjoyed watching this week.

One thing I’m wondering is if I could pull off bangs like Lucy Lawless. It’s been awhile since I had bangs… Think it will look like I’m not in 6th grade?

a stack of books on Christian hospitality.

Learning about Christian Hospitality

Last week I ordered a bunch of books on Christian Hospitality. I returned three of them, but am really eager to read the other four. My friend Lynn and I read the first one, Extraordinary Hospitality (for Ordinary People) by Carolyn Lacey last week.

It was good — and fun to have a Marco Polo book club of sorts.

Date Days

Bryan and I had our June Date Day aka Vacay Day yesterday. It was a little out of the ordinary as we were both responsible to pick kids up at the end of it. Usually there’s no agenda so we don’t really look at the clock.

Still, it was good to hang out and talk. We covered all kinds of territory from Eve to vocal lessons to my running a 5k!

It’s so nice to grapple with big ideas together.

Easy Meals

I busted out my 30-minute cookbook this week to make some old recipes for taco night: Tacos Fisher (a recipe Bryan invented when we were dating) and Tres Frijoles Salad (a fun twist on three bean salad.)

It’s been so nice to have my meal plan on autopilot this month!

With summer in full swing, have you grabbed your copy of the Summer Self-Care Planner?

hand holding summer self-care book in front of a living room scene.

I know, the summer is busy still, but it inherently carries with it a little “sit in the hammock” kind of vibe, a vibe I want YOU to make the most of this year. Even with summer camps and vacations and all the other things that happen when you’re momming, you can still take a deep breath, and make the most of the seasons you’re in. Right?

I wish there were something really exciting to report this week, but there isn’t. I think things would seem more “exciting” except that I didn’t take the time to plan and journal this week. Life just happened without my thinking too much about it, creatively or otherwise. There are probably really good reasons to do…

Oh me oh my! Are we really halfway through June? Being sick all of May really was a time warp for me. This week I’ve done what was unthinkable a few weeks ago: get up at 5 am every morning. I know. But, like this palm tree Bryan found at work growing through the asphalt,…

Thankful for rain, but also thankful for beautiful sunrises. Having grown up in seasons of California drought, I understand the need for rain. We got a lot of it this week in San Diego county! It’s put a damper on my sunrise mornings, but I was particularly happy for the rain clouds to dissipate enough…

Here’s where I ramble about the important and the mundane of every day life. This week let’s chat heat waves, grounding, fast food, and what’s eating my basil. Hello, Hi, How are you? We are sweating to the oldies around here…. not because of any particular exercise routine, just that it’s hot and I like…

Life feels, no, I feel, unsettled. Not sure why, but I aim to find out. This week there were some amazing, mind-blowing sunrises and some non-sunrises when the heavy fog blocked any view of the homes past our fence, let alone the sun. The day pictured was one of those amazing days. Wow. Honestly, it…
