Last day of the month! The year is 1/6 over. That’s kinda wild. Here’s what I’ve been doing, eating, listening, reading, and writing this past week.

What I’ve been doing

Honestly, the week went by so quickly, I hardly know. Just as I get in the groove of the spring semester, we’ve now entered rolling spring breaks. CBS took off last week; CLRC took off this past week. It’s jamming up my routines.

All the same, I’m getting grounded, slowly.

Bryan and I take the last Friday of the month as a vacation day so today was mostly relaxing and walking and talking. Always a good thing.

What I’m eating

I’m still working on my protein goal and getting steps. I’m down five pounds from February 1st, so that feels like a win.

Bryan and I chatted about it and what would help me. Staying “on track” at dinner, ie protein and veg, is helpful. So the last few date nights and today’s date lunch we’ve opted out of pizzas and tacos and gone for fish, rice, and salad. Pelly’s fish plate is really good. I will have to remember to take a picture next time.

What I’m listening to

I had the privilege of appearing on The Art of Home Podcast this week. Allison is such a wise woman and a superb conversationalist.

We talked about so many things, from scrubbing down my first college apartment to how I haven’t done my kids’ laundry in over ten years, plus all kinds of food and money stuff.

You can listen here:

I hope you will have a listen and leave a review on the Art of Home.

FishChick16 and I are also listening to the audio of Out of the Silent Planet by CS Lewis. This counts as reading, right?

What I’m reading

It looks like I read 10 books in February, but it’s actually closer to 20-25; many of the books I put on the shelf are actually multi-book series. I didn’t think I needed to add all their covers.

I’m counting my year to date total at a conservative 21. I’ve mostly updated my To Read 2025 post with mini reviews.

I’ve been exploring the romance genre, as you know, surveying the land and trying to decide what I’d like to write.

What I’m writing

This morning I found out about an MFA in Creative Writing program, that if we had the money, I’d be jumping at. It’s “an academically rigorous, low-residency MFA program
for those aspiring to recover a faithful, theologically rich approach to creative writing.”

To be clear, I’ve never desired another graduate degree. But I got weepy when I read about this program. Like seriously, bawled my eyes out to my husband, who to his credit did not look at me like I was bonkers.

Bryan and I talked about it. He is on board if it’s something I want to pursue. Again, if we had the money just sitting around…. Yes!

Since we don’t, I’m working out a syllabus for myself to read as much of the literature included in the program as I can discover. (I’m fairly good at internet deep dives.) It’s one thing to say, “this would be cool,” and another to actually do the work.

I’ll be building my collection of writing resources, starting with Saves the Cat Writes a Novel, and trying to do a DIY homeschool version. That said, if anyone has $30k to invest in my writing career, let me know. 😉

Alrighty, that’s it for me. I hope you’ll leave a comment and let me know what you’ve been up to!

  1. Please write a clean, Christian romance!!!! You’d have three readers at my house!

  2. Did you like Worst Wingman Ever? I only recently read anything from Abby Jimenez and it was a short story, not a novel. I enjoyed it, just wonder if there’s a difference beyond length? There was some language that didn’t seem necessary, but…

    1. So, I’ve read several of her books and liked the story lines and the characters. The premise for WWE is super cute.

HOWEVER, I have big disagreements in her worldview, particularly as it addresses sex, relationships, and marriage. It is not a Christian worldview, but I don’t think she claims it is.

The characters in Worst Wingman Ever have an all-around casual view of sex. While I recognize that much of the world holds the same view, making this book “realistic,” it still rubs me wrong. There’s no character that disagrees with it — and there are actually some of us who believe sex belongs in marriage.

I enjoyed a lot of the book and I’ve enjoyed her other books, but with that caveat/warning. Not sure if that makes sense?
