About four years ago my husband was diagnosed with a bulging disk. I was pregnant with FishChick at the time, and it was a scary time watching him practically paralysed with pain.

Thankfully, treatment, time, and exercise put him back in the swing of things. And he’s had a respite from debilitating pain for about three and a half years.

Until now. For some reason the pain is back, exacerbated by some odd thing, we don’t know what.

So when the book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back, came across my desk, we both thought it was worth checking out.

Esther Gokhale has created a series of exercises that can help to relieve back pain. These are carefully and pictorially explained in the book. In fact, as books are concerned, the photos and quality of printing are above the norm.

Additionally, the book explains how we in the West suffer more back pain than those living in other countries. Part of this is due to posture, lifting, and the ways that we bend. She points out alternatives and suggests reasons why this will improve your back health.

Obviously, neither of us are doctors, so we can’t vouch for any medical claims in or about the book. While FishPapa’s back pain has lessened since starting the exercises, it is by no means gone. And it would be hard to determine whether it’s time, different daily activity or these specific exercises that are bringing him some relief.

That said, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back is worth a look if you or someone you love experiences back pain. And it could be a great father’s day gift for the right guy.

  1. One thing I would say: see a chiropractor. I work for one, and they are the best! Mine has treated many people for bulging and herniated discs, and he not only treats the symptoms, he gets right down to the problem and treats that!

    1. Yes, Kristin. But, unfortunately, not all chiropractors are created equal. It takes a while (and a chunk of change) to find a good one.

  2. Oh my gosh! I have a bulging disc (thanks to baby D #2!) and haven’t had any problems for quite a while…until this morning! I am sitting here trying to barely move to stave off the pain! I hope your hubby’s back gets better quickly and thank you for the resource suggestion 😉

  3. Thanks for this post. My husband has 3 herniated discs in his upper spine and is in constant pain. I am going to look into buying this book seeing that there is nothing the doctor’s try to do helps.

  4. Thank you for posting this! My hubby has a herniated disc and arthritis in his back (and he’s just turned 28!) and nothing his dr is doing seems to be helping! It really is so hard to see him in pain. I’m going to look for this book tomorrow, maybe it will help him!

  5. Thanks for this recommendation! BrownThumbPapa has suffered with back pain ever since he tried to move a cabinet BY HIMSELF at his comic shop. He doesn’t want to take any pain meds but this may just do the trick.
