Strolling through the Valentine section of a local store with my 9-year old son, I heard him groan, “I hate Valentine’s Day. It’s so ewwww.”

What followed was a very enlightening conversation. It wasn’t the chocolates and candies that he objected to; it was the mushy stuff. “I can’t stand all that lovey dovey stuff.”

I took his sentiments to heart and developed a boy-friendly Super Mario Valentine that’s easy to make and so fun to give!

Here’s how to put together your own little Valentine treat bags that won’t make boys go “ewww.” Plain and simple, too, for you minimalists out there.

Supplies for a Super Mario Valentine

Here’s what you’ll need:

supplies to make the super mario valentine cards.

the free valentines printable – there are three cards per page, so print off as many as you need, divided by three. Subscribe here to get access.

Valentine treats – I chose chocolates as well as the Mario-branded Funables. You might also look for other Super Mario-inspired candies, such as candy mushrooms or Runts with their varied fruit shapes

plastic bags – use bags big enough to hold the treats. Traditional snack bags are ideal since they aren’t super big. Since the fruit snacks were too large for snack bags, I sized up.

tools – You’ll also need scissors for cutting the cards and a stapler for attaching them to the bags.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Print out the cards and cut along the lines. Fold down the back third of each card. You can sign the back if you’d like.
  2. Divide the candy among your snack bags and seal them shut.
  3. Insert the top of the snack bag into the opening of the folded card. Staple the card to the bag.

  1. Perfect! Just what I need for my two boys, age 8 & 10, who are not into the lovey dovey cards.

  2. I love it! My 4th grader is putting names on these right now! I love the simplicity and lack of “cheese”. 🙂 Thanks!!!

    1. Yes. I figure with boys they might draw or add stickers. But simple always works so well.

  3. Cute!(or should I say Cool?;) I think this would be nice to stick in the kiddos lunch box too, for a “sweet surprise!”

  4. That’s awesome! What a great mom you are – helping your boys find a way to celebrate without it being too mushy-gushy “ewww”. 🙂 Love it! I also love it that it can be made at home and you don’t have to spend a ton on store-bought valentines (which I usually only buy AFTER Valentine’s day – for super cheap!).
We have 3 boys here (and 2 girls), and our youngest is still in the age where giving Valentine’s is ok. Might have to try this!
    Thanks again for posting!

  5. I am doing your valentine for boys ~ it was very hard to not punch a hole in the valentine and tie it on with a ribbon (but i didn’t) i did print them on pink paper (i would have used red if i had it) and cut them out with fun scissors. My son is 11?

  6. I definately recognized the Super Mario element of it, I bet some mario stickers would cement the idea.

I am not much on the valentines they have at the stores either, they are chintzy and the to/from spaces are so small that by the time my boys are done writing their friends names their isn’t any room for them to write their own.

While cruisin pinterest a while back I found this http://pinterest.com/pin/51439620713571983/ and really liked some of the ideas.

For our boys we are going to do just like you and use ziplock bags and staple on bag toppers that I print off.

My boys are scouts, and are really into camping so the oldest is doing the smore’s valentines- 2 marshmellows, a chocolate bar and a graham cracker with a topper that says “I need ‘smore’ valentines like you” the youngest son loves fishing and is doing the bags of multicolored goldfish with a topper that says ” Valentine your a great catch”

I think they are super cute and can’t wait to help them put them together!!!
