What Does Organized Feel Like?

Being organized doesn’t mean having everything perfectly in order. But, it can help you get on your game.

Last week as I was catching up on my Google reader, I saw an update from my friend, Jules:

I started feeling really sick on Monday, so it was with great pleasure that I grabbed one of Jessica‘s freezer meals from the freezer and plopped it in the crockpot. So this is what organized feels like!

While I certainly loved her compliments regarding my cookbook (go here to read what else she had to say), what struck me was more the comment:

I know exactly what she means. I love that feeling! Currently, I can’t find the top of my desk; it’s completely buried in papers, lists, and receipts. But, I dream of it being organized once again.

Some days organized means something as simple as being able to find a flat space to write on!

It’s true that organized can look differently to each of us, depending on what we have going on and how we struggle with life in general. Jules’ post got me thinking: what does organized feel like? (If you read her site, you’ll know she’s got a lot more organized than just freezer meals.)

I’d suggest that it is:

  • knowing where things are when you need them
  • being able to think straight even when you have a lot of your plate
  • having a peace about your responsibilities and knowing that you can handle them
  • having some kind of plan for dealing with the unexpected, even if it’s something as simple as a freezer meal.

I have spent a lifetime, well, at least 20 years, to have some sense of “organized”. Some days I achieve it, some days I most definitely do not. I’m a work in progress. Aren’t we all?

Obviously there are some practical, tangible things that we can do to be more organized. Here are my top five to get a good start on the week:

  1. Have a meal plan for the week and do the grocery shopping. (Bonus points if I do some meal prep in advance.)
  2. Consult the family calendar and make note of errands and appointments. I try to either write it all on the weekly page in my planner or sync it on my Google calendar. (Bonus points if I do both, which has rarely if ever happened.)
  3. Make sure school lesson plans are ready (or in the case of non-homeschoolers, I’d say make sure homework is done and ready to go back to school).
  4. Do a whole house pick-up, even if it means stashing wayward items out of sight temporarily.
  5. Catch up on the laundry. (Ha! At least get the piles folded and put away.

If those five things have happened by the time Monday morning rolls around, I feel like I’m on my game instead of trailing behind a day late and a dollar short. So tell me….

    I think it feels the same for me as you, especially being able to find what I need and having a plan for the day. Some of my friends think I am organized which maybe I am somewhat since I had to get my act together once having a bunch of kids, but I tell them how it took me 20 years to get to this point and I still backslide into my old ways sometimes! It is a great feeling.

  2. I am certainly not orgainized, i usually go from OCD-Everything in its place, to not knowing where anything is. Right now I can’t find anything and long for the day that everything will have a place to go. We are remolding and rearraging bedrooms right now so its very chaotic, and we are about to have 3 under 3. So for right now, if the dishes get done, and the laundry is clean and I can find it, I’m happy, lol.

      Give yourself much grace during this season. Love your littles and get a shower. Those are your priorities. ;)

    • We are in the middle of remodeling as well – I’ve never felt more disorganized than the last month and am thankful for a simple schedule and easy meals.

    It’s different for different seasons of life, I think.

    In my current season (4 kids ages 2-8), “organized” means that my husband and I are on the same page. We know when everyone is supposed to be where they need to be. It means knowing that I’ve got a freezer full of healthy, home-cooked meals ready for these busy spring nights. It means that I’m usually only 5 minutes away from walking out the door, because we’ve taken a few minutes the night before to refill diaper bags, fill water bottles, check backpacks and pack whatever else we’ll need for the day.

    This could all change by Tuesday, though. I tend to be optimistic on Mondays :)

  4. Right now I feel organized when I can find my desk, shower, and exercise every day. Most days 2 of those 3 happen, but at least it’s a goal. Am I the only one that feels like there is so much more to organize and keep on top of these days? Even with our goals to be simple and to prioritize, it still seems to be a bit much most days.

    I’m still in awe over how much you accomplish with your family. Keep it up because I love to hear about it and learn about it!

      Awww, thank you. Believe me, we’re just like everyone else. We’ve got messes and piles and bad days, but we keep trying.

      And yes, I’m not sure why it is, but there does seem a lot of details in this life.
