Flowery Things to Make with the Kids (Craft: Flower Hat)

May Day is May 1st. While not a holiday in any true sense of the word, it can be a fun occasion to share flowers with friends and family.

When I was a child, May 1st was an occasion to ding-dong-drop some flowers on your friends’ door. May Day, as it came to be known, has an interesting and varied history. Since I was born in May, I looked at it as a sign of good things to come. Now that the FishMama Trifecta has been instituted, it is evermore a fun little milestone on the calendar.

Spring has sprung in most of the northern hemisphere. Consider this week an opportunity to do some flowery things with the kiddos, whether you call it May Day, or not.

Mini Flower Vase

My girls love to pick the flowers that grow in the yard. I bet yours do, too. Repurpose a plastic food cup into a sweet vase for all those little bouquets you receive.

Alternatively, work with your kids to make several such cups to fill with flowers and to deliver to teachers, neighbors, and friends.

Satin Flower Hair Clips

These Satin Flower Hair Clips are pretty easy to make, and little girls absolutely love them. The gem center definitely adds the bling. The craft does require a hot melt glue gun, so make sure that an adult does that part for young children. Littles can choose the colors of satin and gems as well as help with the cutting.

A Flower Arrangement

At Valentine’s Day FishPapa bought each of us ladies a small bouquet of flowers. Okay, my bouquet was big. Because he’s awesome that way.

Anyway, the girls had a great time arranging their flowers in jars of water. It was so sweet and a fun experience/experiment. You can buy a small bouquet for a few dollars which gives your kids a great chance to make something beautiful for the house.

Flower Pot Place Cards

This Flower Pot Place Cards craft tutorial provides the printable templates, making this an easy craft to cut your kids loose on. Let them color and cut the flowers and glue them on the sticks. The finished projects works great for parties but also looks cute on a child’s shelf or desk.

Flower Cupcakes.

Slice open marshmallows and let your child dip the cut edges in colored sprinkles. If you’re opposed to or on the fence about the artificial colors (I am), try using naturally colored hard candies crushed up (try Trader Joe’s for a local source) or purchase natural sprinkles.

You can also make these Sunflower and Mums Cupcakes. Look for candy corn in varied colors — I’ve seen pink candy corn — so that you can evoke more spring than fall.

A Container Garden

A few years ago FishPapa bought these wine casks in an effort to bridge the gap between our 2-acre garden we once had and the postage stamp backyard that I can’t redo because it doesn’t belong to us. Honestly, I’ve been too busy to garden, but yesterday when I took the girls to Lowe’s to refill it, I was wanting to buy all the plants. Seriously.

We settled for flowers and herbs, but I’m hoping we rig up something for tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers. FishPapa has talked about building me something like this on wheels. Regardless, it was good to get my hands dirty and teach the girls a little bit about gardening. I once was a very avid organic gardener, and my thumb has turned brown.

A Flower Hat

This past weekend when the girls and I attended a tea party at a local restaurant, one of the activities was to make a flower hat. The concept was really cute. The girls got to choose whatever they wanted from a huge pile of supplies.

Creating this at home is easy, especially when you’ve got a box of Kids Craft Supplies.

I didn’t have an opportunity to take pictures of the process, but it’s so simple, I think you’ll get the gist of it this way.
