For years, our family lived on the edge of financial ruin. We lived month-to-month, paycheck-to-paycheck. We were always frugal, but we lived beyond our means nonetheless. Since my husband was self-employed, all it took was an injury or a slough of bad weather to put us off our game.

I lived with the fear and anxiety of this for years. We were living on borrowed money much of the time. What if the unthinkable happened? I wreaked havoc on my nerves and my marriage fretting about that.

I remember praying time and again that God would have mercy on our finances.

He did. He kept my husband healthy. He gave me opportunities to tutor or do freelance writing.

He also let us see the error of our ways. Eventually, we were able to change our habits and start living within our means.

I can’t tell you what peace that has brought to us! Our marriage grew. I became a nicer person. I worry still, but certainly not like I used to. There’s a peace and security to be found in living debt-free. Financially.

The same goes for our spiritual lives. When we’re living beyond what is good and right for us, there isn’t peace. There’s death and sadness and a poignant lack of hope.

While not everyone is flagrant with his money, all of us have fallen short of what God calls us to. All have sinned. While you might always be in the black financially, spiritually, we’ve all been in the red.

Yet, the beauty of Easter, the beauty of Christ, is that He has redeemed us for Himself. . We can live “debt-free” completely and fully because of the price He paid.

You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross. — Colossians 2:13-15

May the beauty and hope of Easter be yours today.
